solar system moving 100000 mph fast

It turns out that our solar system is moving nearly 100,000 m.p.h. faster than previously thought — revolving around the center of the Milky Way at 568,000 m.p.h., announced Mark Reid of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics on Monday at the American Astronomical Society's conference in Long Beach, Calif. Since velocity is related to mass, the 15% increase in solar-system speed translates into a near doubling of mass of the Milky Way, according to Reid's group — and all of that newfound bulk is composed of dark matter.
Original estimates of the solar system's speed were based on what Reid calls "one- dimensional velocity" obtained solely from Doppler shifts. "Now," he says, "we have three-dimensional velocity and more exact measurements" — a huge advancement in the field. The findings debunk the notion that the Milky Way is a little-sister galaxy to her neighbor Andromeda. "They're more like fraternal twins," Reid says. And the fact that they are of equal size increases the likelihood that the two will someday collide.
But humans needn't flee the galaxy anytime soon. First, there's so much room between stars that Earth likely wouldn't feel any effects of a galactic collision, though our constellations would certainly change. And second, a crash is still about 3 billion to 5 billion years away, by which time our sun will have transformed into a red giant and turned the Earth into a smidgen of charred dust.

Sandia, Stirling Energy Systems Set New World Record

On a perfect New Mexico winter day — with the sky almost 10 percent brighter than usual — Sandia National Laboratories and Stirling Energy Systems (SES) set a new solar-to-grid system conversion efficiency record by achieving a 31.25 percent net efficiency rate. The old 1984 record of 29.4 percent was toppled on SES’s “Serial #3” solar dish Stirling system at Sandia’s National Solar Thermal Test Facility.
The conversion efficiency is calculated by measuring the net energy delivered to the grid and dividing it by the solar energy hitting the dish mirrors. Auxiliary loads, such as water pumps, computers and tracking motors, are accounted for in the net power measurement.
Each dish unit consists of 82 mirrors formed in a dish shape to focus the light to an intense beam onto a receiver, which transmits the heat energy to a Stirling engine. The engine is a sealed system filled with hydrogen. As the gas heats and cools, its pressure rises and falls. The change in pressure drives the pistons inside the engine, producing mechanical power, which in turn drives a generator and makes electricity.

Toyota Developing Solar Powered Car

Toyota Motor is developing a vehicle that will be powered solely by solar energy in an effort to turn around its struggling business with a futuristic ecological car, a top Japanese business daily reported.
The Nikkei newspaper, however, said it will be years before the planned vehicle will be available on the market. Toyota’s offices were closed Thursday and officials were not immediately available for comment.
Toyota is working on an electric vehicle that will get power from solar cells equipped on the vehicle, and that can be recharged with electricity generated from solar panels on the roofs of homes. The automaker later hopes to develop a model totally powered by solar cells on the vehicle.

In December, Toyota stunned the nation by announcing it will slip into its first operating loss in 70 years, as it gets battered by a global slump, especially in the key U.S. market. The surging yen has also hurt the earnings of Japanese automakers.
Still, Toyota is a leader in green technology and executives have stressed they won’t cut back on environmental research despite its troubles.
Toyota, the manufacturer of the Lexus luxury car and Camry sedan, has already begun using solar panels at its Tsutsumi plant in central Japan to produce some of its own electricity

Allco Wants to Turn Former Toxic Waste Dump into solar energy farm

New York-based Allco Renewable Energy wants to build the largest solar energy farm east of the Mississippi river. Their chosen location is in Coventry, Rhode Island, on land that gained infamy in the 1970s as an illegal hazardous waste dump and which became a Superfund site in the 1980s.
At first the solar energy farm would have 8 megawatts of production capacity, but Allco is also considering installing wind turbines if the site is suitable. But there is already some controversy: Allco wants some guarantees that it will be able to sell its power to the local utility for a certain time and at a certain rate, something that is not yet certain

Dattos - The Body as Information Platform

The Body as Information Platform

The concept of the Dattoo arose in response to current trends towards increasing connectivity and technology as self-expression. To realize a state of constant, seamless connectivity and computability required the convergence of technology and self. The body would need to literally become the interface. Computers and communication devices require physical space, surfaces, and energy. The idea of DNA tattoos (Dattoos) is to use the body itself as hardware and interaction platform, through the use of minimally-invasive, recyclable materials.

The Self Within Society

To achieve absolute personal identification, the hardware would capture DNA from the user's body, enabling direct participation in the political and cultural landscape. The technology would link remote users through engagement with their areas of interest. The system would be personalized not only by this DNA inclusion, but by a more standard procedure in which users choose the applications they carry. Content I/O - including tools like cameras, microphones and laser-loudspeakers - would be connected to "interface pods", then function as generic hardware. Dattoos are to be created on the body, in clothing, or via accessories, so they remain constantly with the user. Software would be "liquid," so that it looks as if the UI and content interaction are an extension of the bionic body.

Expressive Technology
All hardware would be created on demand and assembled via a special online design portal. Users view, test-drive, and select their product from a variety of options, both functional and aesthetic. They also set the lifecycle of the product, to be utilized for a few hours or a much longer amount of time. Once users are satisfied with their specific configurations, they have this fully-functioning circuitry - including all UI-interactive and display functions - "printed" onto recommended areas of their skin. Energy would be pulled from the human body to run the programs. At the end of the day, users would simply wash the Dattoos off, beginning anew the following day.

Future City

Many people are wondering what the future city will look like. If I were to look into my crystal ball, what I would see is that future cities will be clean, green and full of optimism and hope.
The city of the future will be cleaner and greener because of solar and hydrogen energy. Elevated hydrogen trains (Hyrail) will be powered by solar energy that electrolyzes water for fuel cells. This electricity will power MagLev Hyrail trains.
Also running through future cities will be, at ground level, hydrogen fuel cell trains (or Hydrail). While Hyrail will most typically be passenger trains, hauling people around the future cities, Hydrail will be using the power of hydrogen fuel cells to haul cargo inside and outside of town.
The future cities of America and elsewhere will also be heavily equipped with solar panels. There will be photovoltaic panels on the rooftops on almost every building and the windows of each building will double as solar panels as well.
And, of course what would a future city be without a future car for every driver? These future cars will run on hydrogen, electricity, biofuels and even air. There may even be a few future flying cars that sail above traffic during rush hour. Thing Jetson or Flux Capacitor, then think again. Prototypes are here now.
In the cities of the future, every building will have smart technology. The smart technology will distribute and conserve energy through the building where it is needed most. Also, many buildings using solar energy will produce more electricity than they consume. They will be tied into the smart grid, selling power back and the smart grid will redistribute the energy in sections of the state and country where it is needed most.
The future city will also be inhabited with huge balloons filled with algae the produce hydrogen. This hydrogen will then either be run through stationary fuel cells to provide energy or be used as fuel for cars.
City life in the future will be a bit different than it is today. Future phones and laptops will have merged into small hybrids with WiFi everywhere and VoIP the standard for carrying voice and video data.

Future robots will have taken over the many tasks. The Honda ASIMO robot will be in a Tech Museum right downtown. Other kinds of robots will inhabit the future home.
People will only travel for vacation as the need to travel for business will be eliminated with the virtual business world. And for people who do want to go on vacation will do so either on supersonic jets or Maglev bullet trains.
The typical future city will also be filled with people using jetpacks instead of driving their own vehicles or in addition to their vehicles. Fuel grade hydrogen peroxide will power these jetpacks that only emit water vapor and will be able to travel for miles before refueling.
This vision of what the future cities will look like is all based upon emerging technology that is available now. This emerging technology of course has to be refined, downsized in many cases and of production quality. Look for nanotechnology to have taken over in many fields.
The future city will be a bright, hopeful place filled with green energy, interconnectivity and applied virtual reality.

Future Medical Technology

To expand upon future medical technology involving nanobots, this microscopic robots will not only deliver medicine and cut out unwanted cells, but they will do so precisely, automatically and thoughtfully. Just like robotic surgical machines will have access to large medical databases and make decisions on the fly more accurately than humans, medical nanobots a few years after this will be afforded the same empowerment.
At first, the future medical nanobots will take wireless instructions from a "thinking" computer host outside of the patient's body. But, as the medical nanorobotics field grows and chips and hard drive further downsized, then swarms of nanobots can be release into a human body, load sharing information and working as a team to cure illnesses, conditions and diseases.

Now, let's talk about some other future trends in medicine such as brain-computer interfaces, regenerative medicine, organ replacement, mental health reclamation, dream decoding, gene therapy, home self-monitoring, personalized drugs, bioengineering, bionic limbs and bionic organs, human cloning and customized babies.
It his here I have to note that not all of these future medical technology advances will occur concurrently. Social and moral discourse along with the zigzag evolutionary progression of the technology will hold some advances back while others will shoot to the forefront of popularity and functionality.
Brain-computer interfaces are nothing new. For several years now patients with organic brain diseases or traumatic brain injuries have been able to move a cursor around on a computer monitor using their thoughts. With future medical technology this interface will be much more robust especially in the areas of brain injuries and mental illness.
The brain-computer interface for brain injuries will be able to localize the specific cell-by-cell damage, report the areas of localization and help the patient through brain plasticity to migrate this functionality to other portions of the non-damaged tissue.
For patients with mental illness diagnoses such as thought disorders, hallucinations, delusions, OCD and a myriad of other disorders listed in the DSM IV will be recorded and dealt with using either localized brain stimulation or engaging other technologies such as nanorobots to deliver targeted medication.
As this future medical technology advances, traditional talk therapy from a psychotherapist will be replaced by computers with large databases that can cross reference case studies in nanoseconds and communicate directly with patients. Other applications for brain-computer communication for mental illness will be dealing with cases of PTSD where patients relive traumatic experiences such as war or rape
The computer will be able to manage flashbacks, help the patient to deal with memories, loss, grief through using the most efficient and effective neural pathways to optimize brain function and healing channels.
Moving on to regenerative medicine, future medical technology will dictate that at first this will take place outside the human body and then through robotic surgery or nanorobots tissue will be replaced. Another offshoot of this process will be organ replacement.
At first, organs from other animals will be used as they are now. But future medical technology will dictate that this tissue will be combined with human tissue, then be transplanted into the patient. A little further down the road, medical technology will advance to the point where patients will grow new organs based upon their own tissue samples.
And based upon this technology this new organ growth will take place inside the body so the transplantation will become unnecessary. The old tissue will simply overtake the diseased tissue regenerating and replacing diseased or damaged tissue at an accelerated rate.
Mental health reclamation I've already discussed, but this will be aided by dream decoding. Right now medical science still does not know the function of dreams and dreaming. Future medical technology however, will crack the code of the healing power of dreaming, deciphering symbols and will use the power of this to not only cure insomnia and other sleep disorders, but to empower one's own dreams for optimal mental health.
The use of computers with large dream databases will be used along with large social dreaming networks where people can interact with others who are also dreaming worldwide. Safety and security nets will need to be employed to prevent all sorts of misuse such as dream bullying or other scare tactics. The dreamer will be able to opt out, change social networks or go off onto other peaceful tangents and fantasies of one's one if desired.
Gene therapy is already happening now and will become more robust in the future. With the Human Genome Project fully analyzed, future medical technology will be able to target specific defective genes in one's DNA and replace those genes with healthy ones. Future computers will easily track, record, analyze and put these in a huge medical database for others to use as needed.
Home self monitoring is also something that is already happening. Diabetics can export data into their home computer and graph insulin usage and other details. Those on CPAP for sleep apnea can also download results and track progress.
But future medical technology will reach a new level of home self monitoring never imagined before. In fact, for some patients, hospitals will become decentralized in that patients will be able to monitor their own conditions from the comfort of their own homes as the first line of defense, then upload the data to a more centralized medical center.
This medical center will analyze the data with a large database and neural network of cloud computing and may engage in some medical procedures with the patient at their own home. Adjusting medication intake, tracking cancer cell growth and deploying nanorobots as necessary and dealing with mental health issues are a few tasks that may be initiated by self monitoring but acted upon in locations outside the home.
In the future, personalized drugs will become increasingly common. No longer will huge pharmaceutical drug cartels roll out common pills for the masses that may have a host of side effects for a percentage of individuals. Small decentralized drug companies will take over that will serve individuals in certain regions.
Future medical technology will get to the point that medicine can be created to individual specifications on an economic basis. Drug companies will have access to a persons medical files from fetus to present age including genetics, diseases, DNA, data from nanorobots, from brain-computer communications, from dream decoding, gene therapy, home self-monitoring, bioengineering, cloning, bionics and a myriad of other medical information per individual. All of this cumulative data will be used to create designer medication specific to each human.
Now to move onto bionic limbs, they already exist and people are using them in the now. No longer is this science fiction, but it is indeed science fact. In the future, however, bionic limbs will be much more elegant and fluid in nature. People will be able to choose bionics over natural limbs and then have these procedures reverse.
Before some of the other more sophisticated technologies that I've already talked about come of age, bionic organs will be in place assisting people to stay alive and remain healthy. This will, however, most likely be more transitional technology than a permanent mainstay.
Human cloning meets much resistance today and will continue to meet resistance. Conservative religious groups will thwart the growth of science and technology in this area. Because science and technology will continue to struggle to analyze and quantify the "soul" and "consciousness" to the satisfaction of the masses, this area will not advance as quickly as other areas.
Another area of moral objection will be customized babies. Some parents are presently engaging in this practice today, though it is very controversial. Some parents today create their children using only sperm or eggs from Mensa donors or other "super donors".
There are also some parents that today engage in genetic screening and use artificial insemination to pick suitable candidates basic partly upon genetics and partly upon other factors such as a donor's history, family, status, abilities and many more criteria.
Not all countries will have laws discouraging the future medical technology in this area, so people without moral reservations can shop abroad for services to create their customized children.
This is just a glimpse into the future medical technology that is not very far off. What I have outlined here is happening right now either commercially or in the research labs. This is not science fiction, but rather a prognostication of how the medical technology will play out in the months and years to come.

Solar Rucksack

The solar rucksack is an innovative backpack concept that has been designed to keep the bodily warmth of users in icy conditions, especially for those who love to climb on mountains peaks or treks or works in polar states. The outer surface of the backpack features solar panels that collect solar energy from the sun and converts it to thermal energy. To distribute the generated heat evenly to the user’s body, a circular patch has been utilized on the clothing that remains attached with the backpack via a connecting pipe. Aside from its ultimate functionality, the stylish design of the backpack aims to enhance the user’s aesthetic than other usual backpacks.
